Age Estimation in the Living

There is an increasing call for age estimation in the living by courts in the UK.

Age estimation in the living is undertaken through analysis of skeletal and dental maturation.

Estimation of age involves the examination of radiographs and CT scans by experienced practitioners.

Age estimation requires the analysis of the following images:

  • An Orthopantomogram (OPG) of the teeth
  • A radiograph of the left hand/wrist
  • A CT scan of the medial clavicles (in older individuals only)

Age estimation is undertaken at CAHID by practitioners who have successfully completed the AGFAD proficiency test in age estimation techniques.
