Identification from Images

Photographs of a crime which contain the offender can be analysed and compared to photographs of a defendant.

Images can be enhanced and analysed by an anatomically- trained forensic anthropologist to provide evidence regarding the similarities or differences between the contents of the images.

Commonly images include:

  • Hands
  • Forearms
  • Faces
  • Genitalia

Offender (or Victim) image comparison has numerous forensic applications, such as CCTV analysis, or investigation of images of child abuse found on electronic devices or distributed across the internet.

Various features can be examined: scars, moles, freckles, tattoos, knuckle crease and vein patterns have all been used in recent casework undertaken at CAHID.
