The paradigm shift for UK forensic science

The 2009 National Academy of Science (NAS) report highlighted that Forensic Science was at a point of global crisis in relation to the scientific underpinning of many of its specialist areas. In 2015 CAHID led a Royal Society funded four day event that examined developments in forensic science since the NAS report and explored developments and risks via a strategic conversation between scientists and the legal profession. Leading forensic scientists, laboratory managers and senior judiciary came together in a real spirit of collaboration to discuss issues such as analysing the research gaps in existing forensic science practice and future proofing tomorrow’s research as well as the need for judicial primers as highlighted in the Kalisher Lecture given by the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales.
